Have a summer schedule chock-a-block full of music festivals, various showers/parties/ weddings, and weekend getaways? If you’re nodding along more than a bobble head right now, you are probably feeling a whole lot excited and perhaps just a little burnt out (or is that sun burnt?)… AND it’s only June.
There is this idea that when the sun’s out, we have to be out too- in full force. Being Raincouver, we definitely have to make the most of these three months and I’m not advocating staying in; however I AM suggesting that we all take a little more care of ourselves. Two friends who are doing a charity boxing match once said-
IT ISN’T SO MUCH ABOUT HOW HARD YOU CAN GO, BUT HOW QUICKLY YOU CAN RECOVER BEFORE YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT YOUR 100% AGAIN.
While they were talking about boxing, I like to think that it’s generally good life advice. Thus, I bring you- 3 tips for a quick recharge.
1. PICK YOUR BATTLES & PICK YOUR VICTORY PARTIES.
This one’s a no-brainer but worth a mention. Do we really need to go to our best friend’s boyfriend’s cousin’s wedding? Maybe. Or maybe not- it’s up to you.
Consider that you have a limited amount of energy, and, if you don't believe me & you're the energizer bunny reincarnated, you can’t deny that you have a limited amount of time. There is a sanskrit phrase called Brahmancyaria (Brah-man-cha-ria) in Yoga- which can (very) loosely be translated to mean moderation. It is often used to mean celibacy or moderation in sexual relationships- but the underlying belief is the same. Essentially, when we “give our energy so loosely”, we deplete ourselves. Instead, we focus on harnessing the energy to look inwards.
If you aren't down for that, consider this- We are often convinced to go along with plans we aren’t 100% game for, for fear of missing out (FOMO is real). Here- I give you the principle of contentment. Ponder that. Where you are is where you need to be.
If it’s too late to cull back on your calendar, here are two ways you can work with what you’ve got:
2. DO ONE THING FOR YOU EVERY DAY.
You can’t take care of others if you aren’t taking care of yourself. We all know this and this surely isn't the first time we've heard it. There's a reason this second point is often mentioned from self help books to magazine articles. If you can take a night to treat yourself with all the things that make you feel good (bubble baths, bag of chips, Netflix, a good book, whatever), guilt-free, great! If you don’t have the luxury of a full night, pick one thing to luxuriate over each day before you get caught up in the whirlwind of happenings. Whether it’s breakfast, your walk to work, or even your daily sit on the toilet, enjoy it to its fullest capacity. Savour it and make it special. Mindfulness, baby.
3. TAKE FIVE
If you are new to breath work, meditation, or mindfulness, humour me for the next bit. All you have to do for this is set your phone timer to 5 minutes, close your eyes, and take a seat somewhere safe. Until your phone goes off, do your best to focus simply on sitting and breathing. Everything else will still be there when you open your eyes- for now, slow it down. When we take a moment to breathe consciously, we are able to create space in our day that we didn’t think we had. It’s 5 minutes. You can do anything for 5 minutes. And don’t worry too much about whether or not you’re “doing it right”. As Nike would say- Just do it.
So there you have it- a few tips (which may feel like common sense) to recharge your batteries. Now go on and have fun. Just remember to know your limit, & actually play within it.
